Never Say Never

Today I did something I said I would NEVER do. Since I became a mom, I've learned not to say that, but there was one thing I held onto. The one thing I swore I would never ever do, no matter what. Well, that all changed. And here's how I became a minivan drivin' momma.

As mentioned in my previous post, Scott's car was crunched in an accident and mine was having some issues. My wagon was great. It had 155k miles on it and it was just time to get our family into something more dependable. Scott really wanted to look at the Volkswagen CC's, so after picking my car up at the Volvo shop, we headed to Cable Volkswagen. Scott found a CC to look at and I began to browse around. I got into a Tiguan and then ventured out to check out a Touareg. Oh, I really liked the Touareg. Scott decided to walk outside to see what he could find. As Scott walked out the door, I heard him ask, "What's that thing?" Our wonderful salesman, David replied, "It's only the number 1 rated minivan. The Routan." Scott couldn't believe it was a minivan. I yelled "Don't you dare!" and off he went.

Scott climbed in the back of the Routan and the girls soon followed. I was grumbling the whole time. The girls immediately started jumping up and down yelling, "this is the most awesome car ever! It has two DVD players! Can we get this one Mommy? PLEASE?!?!?!" I quickly replied, no way and then turned to Scott and told him that I was going to kill him! "No way am I driving a minivan! I am way too young. I don't care how silly it is and how prideful I'm being, I'm not driving a van!" Scott began to tell me how comfortable the seats were and the girls continued to explore and get more excited. I looked at it, refusing to get inside. At once, I heard a quite Voice, "It's got everything you want (safe, 3rd row, comfortable for travel & space for luggage, golf clubs, etc.). Scott likes it (good gas mileage, good price). The girls obviously love it." I whispered, "NO! Not a van." We closed the doors with out me stepping one foot in the thing and continued to look around.

It came time to talk price on some of these automobiles we had looked at. That quiet little Voice continued to speak to me. Scott and David began discussing the CC, the Tiguan and the Toureg. From out of no where, I said, "Run the numbers on the Routan. To even consider it, it's going to have to be loaded with every possible option." What?!?!?! I seriously shocked myself. We gave the sales & finance guys our range and told them to call us over the weekend with the numbers.

I woke up early Friday morning to spend some time with God. My mind was not on the van or on cars that morning, but as I read my bible, that Voice began to speak to me again. "No, God! I really don't want to drive a van!" I pleaded. Ever so gently, He told me that I really should. Scott & I had prayed and were confident in the amounts we had decided on for each car. Scott told me I could get whatever I wanted, but the big SUV's with 3rd rows that I really wanted just didn't seem like an option for me. I was fine with getting another SUV without the 3rd row, but God wanted me to have the ability to fill my car up with more kids, more people. The loaded out Routan could do that and for thousands less that a basic SUV. God also addressed my pride. He reminded me that I have come along way and have surrendered so much of my selfish pride and now He wanted me to surrender this. "It's silly, and you need to give it to Me!" I heard clearly. "You know what happens when you are obedient" He said. Wow! How could I argue with that? By the end of my conversation and pleading with God, I knew that if the dealership came back with a certain number, we were supposed to say yes. And guess what? They did.

We spent the weekend in Tulsa. I had moments where I was so excited, but moments where it really made my tummy hurt to think about driving a van. My mom had reminded me how much fun we had in ours when I was growing up. My brother and I did love her Chevy Astro Van. I texted a friend that had recently gotten a van that really didn't want to either. Talking to them made me feel a little better, but each time Scott and I talked, I would tell him, I know it's what I'm supposed to do, but it's really hard. I know, it sounds silly. I don't need a high priced SUV with a label on it to make me feel good about myself, but I really didn't want to drive a van! But, being obedient to God was more important than my selfish emotions.

We went to the dealership today. I still had to drive it and go over a few of the details that I had forgotten to ask about. I got in, took it for a spin and continued to search for any little reason why I shouldn't get this. Maybe I hadn't heard God correctly. I looked over all the details/options that it came with and reviewed the safety features as Scott drove the CC. I walked back out to look it over. I had told them I really didn't care about the color, but all of the sudden the silver bothered me. Nope, I wanted a black one. That was my last hope. If they didn't have a black one with the options I wanted for the same price, I wasn't going to get it. Guess what...

They had a sparkly black one loaded with all the options I requested. And I'm pleased to say I drove off the lot as happy as can be! I LOVE my Routan. I am so thankful God spoke to me so clearly. I can't wait to see the adventures He's going to take our family on.

"Thank you, Mommy!"

Two very happy little girls.

God is good!!!!!
